Alessandro De Luca

Head of Digital Enterprise Solutions and Group CIO, Merck Group

Alessandro de Luca is the Group Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Merck KGaA, a global science and technology leader with over 63,000 employees worldwide, headquartered in Darmstadt, Germany since 2022.
In July 2025, he has been promoted to the role of Head of Digital Enterprise Solutions, driving the company’s global digital agenda by integrating Data, Technology and Processes into one single function, DES, with @6,000 employees.

As Head of DES and Group CIO, he leads the digital transformation strategy, with a mission to deliver high-impact digital innovations and scalable enterprise services that support Merck’s business growth and long-term aspirations. His leadership has been instrumental in redefining how Merck operates and engages with customers—by embedding cutting-edge digital capabilities, enhancing operational efficiency, and enabling data-driven decision-making across all business sectors.

Previously, Alessandro served as CIO for Merck Healthcare, overseeing a comprehensive technology portfolio spanning R&D, Commercial, Marketing & Sales, and Global Franchises. Earlier in his Merck career, when he joined in 2011, he was responsible for global supply chain operations within Merck Healthcare, including end-to-end planning, physical distribution, and warehousing.

Before joining Merck, Alessandro spent two decades at Procter & Gamble (P&G), where he held a series of leadership roles across Innovation, Manufacturing, Engineering, and Supply Chain Management in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector. His experience at P&G laid the foundation for his deep expertise in leading complex transformations and scaling global operations.

In 2023, he has won the “Top 200 world CIO Awards” by the Global CIO forum.
In 2022, he was awarded as the “10 Most Impactful Healthcare Leaders” by CIO View magazine.
In 2020, his work has been mentioned in the Gartner Executive yearly report for implementing a state of the art for the Digital Transformation in Supply Chain and received several interviews by Wall Street Journal.
In 2019, he has been awarded as “Top 100 Most Influential Leader in Healthcare” by the IFAH (International Forum for Healthcare Advancement).
In 2016, he has been elected “The Inspirational Leader of the Year” for Merck Healthcare.
In 2015, he has been awarded the Nr 1 Pharma “Most Influential Supply Chain Executive in Europe” by the SCM magazine.

Alessandro has a degree in Nuclear Engineering as well as Civil Engineering from La Sapienza Università di Roma.
