Thomas Pellathy

Senior Partner, McKinsey & Company
Thomas Pellathy is a Senior Partner with McKinsey & Company and a core leader of McKinsey’s healthcare practice. He is based in Philadelphia. Tom has more than 20 years of experience working in healthcare, as an advisor to leading healthcare organizations across both the public and private sectors and as a senior executive for one of the largest non-profit integrated health coverage and care delivery organizations. His work focuses on improving quality and health outcomes for individuals, families, and communities, while improving the experience and affordability of care. Within McKinsey, Tom leads our dedicated center of excellence focused on improving healthcare value (improving health outcomes and affordability). In this role, Tom works with leading payors and providers across both the public sector (such as state Medicaid agencies) and private sector (with a focus on non-profit health insurers and providers) to design and implement concrete programs around network design, population health and new models of care, value-based reimbursement, care pathway management, and digital and analytics. This includes supporting clients by delivering robust data and analytic solutions and building capabilities to enable them to drive ongoing execution with their own teams. In addition, Tom is also a core leader of our Rural Healthcare team, which is partnering across states on their approach to rural healthcare transformation. Previously, while based in London, Tom was the leader of our work globally with publicly funded health systems. In that role, he led our work with the NHS in the UK and with Ministries of Health across multiple regions around the world. He has worked extensively in 15+ countries on topics of clinical and population health improvement, digital and analytics transformation, and health sector cost sustainability. Prior to re-joining McKinsey in 2020, Tom served for more than six years as a senior executive at Highmark Health, a $29 billion diversified healthcare company with an integrated health coverage and care delivery model, serving members across PA, WV, DE, and NY. There he had operational accountability for product design, quality, care and utilization management, network design and contracting, value-based reimbursement and payment policy, and digital and analytics – and led some of Highmark’s most important strategic initiatives, including the development of Highmark’s integrated payor-provider model with Allegheny Health Network, provider partnerships to create new models of collaboration with key health systems, and a redesign of Highmark’s core platform and analytics capabilities.
