Dr. Lena Afeyan is the Head of UK Science Strategy and Innovation for Flagship Pioneering. Dr. Afeyan trained as a molecular biologist at Harvard (Broad Institute) and MIT (Whitehead Institute, NIH F31 & MIT Presidential Fellow), where she received her PhD in Biology. Alongside her training, Dr. Afeyan has worked to codify industry learnings on early-stage biotech company building, advancing strategy for several startups and building practitioner-led training programs in Boston as President of the MIT and Harvard Biotech Groups. Since her move to the UK to pursue an MBA at Oxford, Dr. Afeyan has held several strategic leadership roles in UK Life Sciences Initiatives, such as the Oxford-Harrington Rare Disease Therapeutics Accelerator, the Fleming Initiative, and a Genomic Medicine Venture Studio she co-founded.
