Betsy Smith is the Executive Director of IDEO London's Health Practice and a leader in the design of healthier futures. With over two decades of experience in design research and innovation leadership, she works at the intersection of healthcare, consumer experience, and organisational transformation. Her work spans patient experience, service redesign, and new models for proactive engagement — helping institutions reimagine not only the services they deliver, but the systems that shape how people live. Her approach focuses on redesigning the cultural, systemic, and everyday conditions that determine whether people can truly access, trust, and benefit from care. She believes the future of healthcare lies in shifting from reactive treatment to systems that enable lifelong wellbeing. Betsy has led transformative programmes across the UK, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, partnering with senior leaders to build enduring innovation capability and coaching organisations in the tools and mindsets of human-centered design. Prior to joining IDEO’s London studio in 2015, Betsy spent nearly a decade at IDEO Palo Alto and held a teaching appointment at Stanford University. She holds a BS in Engineering/Product Design from Stanford and was awarded the Chilton Memorial Prize for Excellence in Product Design.
